With no major highways nearby, PA 611 Old York Road is an important road between Philadelphia and its northern suburbs.  In the mid-2000s PennDOT installed a traffic control system that linked every signal between Philadelphia and Doylestown except for those in Jenkintown.  Through the Jump Start Program, Montgomery County decided to partner with the borough to upgrade the eight remaining signals and integrate them with the larger network.

Each upgraded signal contains new LED signal heads, emergency vehicle preemption, battery backup, and radio interconnection equipment.  As a result, all of the signals are now coordinated with each other.  Since PennDOT can now take control of traffic along the entirety of PA 611 in the event of a regional evacuation, this project is a truly regional investment.
