Five exceptional projects earned a 2007 Montgomery Award. The Montgomery Awards acknowledge outstanding land developments and revitalization achievements in Montgomery County. They are dedicated to raising planning and design awareness in our communities and honor the developers, consultants, organizations, and municipalities for their commitment and contribution to the enhancement of Montgomery County.
This prestigious program has two major award categories. The Land Development Award focuses on excellence in land development and planning concepts. The three projects receiving this award are Harriton Farm in Lower Merion Township, Station Square Apartment Homes & Shops in Upper Gwynedd Township and Lansdale Borough, and Jarrett Nature Center in Horsham Township. The Revitalization Award recognizes successful revitalization projects and programs. The two award winners in this category are Ambler Main Street Cultural and Entertainment Initiatives in Ambler Borough and The Pavilion in Lansdale Borough.
Harriton Farm received a Land Development Award in recognition of exceptional site design, natural features protection, and impressive historic preservation efforts. Harriton Farm preserved seven historic structures and many natural features, including established views of a scenic open field and duck pond. The project seamlessly blended new residences and historic structures through sensitive site design, complementary architecture, and lush landscaping. Harriton Farm illustrates how creative site planning can effectively retain the historic integrity of a site while creating a pleasant living environment.
Station Square Apartment Homes & Shops earned a Land Development Award for the successful transformation of a former brownfield site into a mixed-use transit-oriented community. This attractive community of residences and shops is within walking distance of the Pennbrook train station. The project involved extensive remediation, creation of a transit-oriented design zoning overlay district, and innovative site design. Station Square Apartment Homes & Shops is an excellent example of a well-designed, walkable, and transit-friendly community in Montgomery County.
Jarrett Nature Center received a Land Development Award in recognition of the innovative concept and the extensive collaboration and commitment involved in the creation of a unique educational nature center. Jarrett Nature Center offers students, teachers, and the community an exceptional opportunity for environmental education, nature appreciation, and passive recreation. This successful project, which involved the development of a master plan, numerous onsite improvements, and dedicated volunteers and partners, is a valuable teaching and learning resource for the school district.
Ambler Main Street Cultural and Entertainment Initiatives earned a Revitalization Award for the commitment and focused effort involved in renewing and enhancing Ambler’s Main Street. These efforts have significantly contributed to Ambler and have helped to stimulate economic growth by bringing about the revitalization of existing businesses throughout the community and encouraging greater private sector investment in the area. Ambler Main Street’s successful cultural and entertainment initiatives have made Ambler Borough a performing arts and culinary destination in the region.
The Pavilion received a Revitalization Award in recognition of the cooperative redevelopment of an older shopping center into an appealing and vibrant commercial center. The project, which involved rehabilitating existing structures and adding new buildings, totally transformed the nearly vacant shopping center and is a thriving, popular destination in the community.
The 2007 Land Development Award Committee, consisting of Montgomery County Planning Commission Board members Dulcie F. Flaharty, Scott Exley, and Pasquale Mascaro, selected the Land Development Award winners.
