Site of First Baptist Church
|
(now Montgomery Plaza)
Across Swede Street, where the high rise office building now stands, previously stood the First Baptist Church (1833) which had a steeple added by Thomas U. Walter in 1850. This was an abolitionist church, where many famous orators, such as Frederick Douglass, are known to have lectured. It is documented as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Note the plaque on the building’s corner of Swede and Airy Streets. |
