NORRISTOWN — Montgomery County is surveying over 600 county dentists to provide needed information for its recently formed Oral Health Care Task Force.
An estimated 148,000 adults in Montgomery County, about 28%, are without dental insurance coverage.
In May of 2003, the Office of the Surgeon General issued A National Call to Action To Promote Oral Health. This report stated that a "silent epidemic of oral diseases is affecting our most vulnerable citizens -- poor children, the elderly, and many members of racial and ethnic minority groups."
The widening need led to the formation of the Montgomery County Oral Health Care Task Force. Data from the surveys will be used to develop initiatives to promote improved oral health care for all residents.
Members of the task force include county departments, local dentists, school nurses, Montgomery County Community College, local foundations, dental hygienists and social workers.
The task force has already sponsored an educational forum on oral health care for school nurses and is working with Temple University to provide them a guide on a topic.
The task force is also sponsoring ‘Clean & Screen’ programs that will provide no-cost denture cleanings and oral cancer screenings in area senior centers this Spring and Summer.
All area dental professionals who receive the survey are strongly urged to complete and return it in order for the county to begin addressing these important issues.
