MONTGOMERY COUNTY COMMISSIONERS DECLARE DISASTER EMERGENCY DUE TO FLOODING
NORRISTOWN — The Montgomery County Commissioners declared a disaster emergency Wednesday as a result of the flooding from Tropical Storm Jeanne the previous evening.
This declaration enables the County and municipalities affected by the flooding to apply for state and federal aid to cover costs associated with responding to the emergency. It will also enable residents and businesses that experienced flooding to apply for state and federal low-interest loans and grants to help them recover.
Municipalities hardest hit by the flooding include: Cheltenham, Hatboro, Lower Merion, Lower Providence, Lower Gwynedd, Narberth, North Wales, Plymouth, Springfield, Upper Merion, Upper Dublin, Upper Moreland and Whitemarsh.
Hundreds of water rescues had to be performed throughout the County Tuesday evening as the floodwaters rose during evening rush hour and trapped motorists in their cars.
The flooding spread to homes, businesses and other buildings as the rains continued into the evening hours. Rescue boats from fire departments as far away as Bucks, Berks and Lehigh counties were called in to help during the emergency.
Three emergency shelters were activated Tuesday evening in the Upper Dublin municipal building, Upper Merion High School and Elkins Park firehouse for those who had to be evacuated by the flooding.
The Montgomery County Court House and Human Services Center in Norristown sustained water damage during the storm. The Perkiomen Trail and Schuylkill River trail were closed in several spots due to downed wires, downed trees and wash outs.
A number of roads in the county remained closed Tuesday, including:
Evans Road at Lorien Drive in Lower Gwynedd
Flint Hill Road and Church Road intersection in Upper Merion
Tookany Parkway in Cheltenham
Mill Road between Stenton Avenue in Whitemarsh and Bethlehem Pike in Springfield
Stenton Avenue near Joshua Road in Whitemarsh
Municipal and County officials are still working to assess the total damage. Crews from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Agency will be in the County later this week to conduct their own assessments.
