REDEDICATION CEREMONY TO MARK 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF COURTHOUSE OPENING
NORRISTOWN — The County Commissioners and President Judge S. Gerald Corso are proud to announce the Rededication Ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the Montgomery Court House.
The ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, May 24th on the Swede Street steps, the exact time and date 100 years ago when then-Governor Pennypacker welcomed thousands to Norristown for the original dedication.
A highlight of the day will be when Leslie Kruhly, Secretary of the University of Pennsylvania, joins the County Commissioners to unveil an original deed to the Court House property from 1856. The University of Pennsylvania gave the Court House property to Montgomery County for $1 and this deed was discovered in our archives recently by Judith Mazzola of the Controller’s Office.
The celebration will also include a historical address by Judge William T. Nicholas, a well-respected local historian, and a keynote address by Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Sandra Schultz Newman.
Much of the ceremony will be reminiscent of the original, including some of the songs that will be performed by the Methacton High School Wind Ensemble and the Norristown Area High School Honor Choir.
In both instances, the pastor of a local Schwenkfelder congregation will have offered the benediction. The Rev. Gene Jerge, pastor of the Olivet Schwenkfelder United Church of Christ in East Norriton, will perform the modern-day honors.
The program will also reflect the change and diversification that has occurred in the County over the past century, such as the invocation being offered by Rabbi David M. Ackerman of Congregation Tiferet Bet Israel.
Much has occurred over the past century and Montgomery County has taken its place as one of the premier counties in our great nation. Come help us celebrate our proud heritage.
