Montgomery County Commissioners Funding Downtown Ambler Improvements

AMBLER — The Montgomery County Commissioners presented Ambler Borough Council with a $249,500 check at its recent meeting for a revitalization grant to make downtown improvements.

The grant includes $200,000 for lighting, decorative lighting, landscaping and a gateway arch at the Lindenwold Parking Lot. It also includes $49,500 for façade improvement grants for commercial buildings.

The Revitalization Program rewards boroughs by helping them improve their downtown areas to attract development, which compliments the County’s Open Space program be relieving the pressure of suburban sprawl, Montgomery County Commissioners Chairman James R. Matthews said.

"The towns are our future," he said. "There is no greater example than Ambler.”

Voters in Montgomery County overwhelmingly approved a $150 million open space preservation program in 2002.

The County will be coming to voters again next year for another bond-supported program to improve traffic flow on area roads, Matthews said.

The state and federal governments have clearly indicated that all of their transportation dollars for the foreseeable future will be used to fix existing roads and bridges that are wearing out.

“Montgomery County and its municipalities are going to have to get together and fix some of our own problems,” Matthews said. “Little things like fixing intersections or coordinating traffic signals can make a big difference.”
