Memorial Bike Ride for EMS Personnel
 
NORRISTOWN — The Emergency Medical Services division of the Montgomery County Public Safety Department and Second Alarmer’s Rescue Squad will welcome the EMS Memorial Bicycle Ride as it comes through Montgomery County on Sunday, May 17th, 2009.
 
The National EMS Memorial Bike Ride, Inc. (www.muddyangels.org) honors Emergency Medical Services personnel who have died in the line of duty by organizing and participating in long distance cycling events.
 
Among this year’s ninety-one honorees will be Michael “Boz” Garvin, who died last year while working at the Second Alarmer’s Rescue Squad
 
Garvin was a long time paramedic with the Second Alarmer’s Rescue Squad, a member of the blood hound search team and a previous part-time County Public Safety employee.
 
The ride started in Tarrytown, NY and will conclude on May 23rd in Roanoke Virginia.
 
A total of 130 bicycle riders, with some “chase” cars and other support units, are expected.
 
The bicycle route on Sunday May 17th, will take the riders from the Hatboro area, through Upper Moreland stopping for a meal at the Second Alarmer’s main station on Davisville Road. After some food and a brief ceremony to honor Michael Garvin, they will continue on their way traveling through parts of Abington and Cheltenham, then entering the City of Philadlephia.
 
Travelers should expect local delays of no more than 5-10 minutes as the bicyclists will be escorted by area police and local fire police/auxiliary police.
 
Below is the exact routes of travel through the County:
Entering Montgomery County on County Line Road and Madison Ave.  The riders will go South on York Road past station 384(Hatboro Second Alarmer’s Station where Garvin regularly worked, then past Hatboro Fire Company, then onto Second Alarmer’s Rescue Squad Main Station. The riders will stop at the headquarters of Second Alarmers Rescue Squad for a brief ceremony to honor “Boz.”  After the stop, they will proceed past Willow Grove Fire Company and then onto Philadelphia.
