Student Who Won Eagle naming Contest Honored by County Commissioners
ROYERSFORD — The student was honored by the Montgomery County Commissioners Tuesday for naming an injured Bald Eagle being taken care of by the Department of Parks and Heritage Services.
Aliyah Martinez, a fourth-grader at Gotwals Elementary School in Norristown, received a certificate of commendation at Upper Schuylkill Valley Park in Royersford. That is where Montgomery, the name Aliyah picked, has been living since February.
Montgomery was the victim of a gunshot wound and his flying ability is now limited due to the injury. In a case like this, a bird cannot be released back into the wild.
The staff at Upper Schuylkill Valley Park worked for months to get the federal permit and permission to bring the Bald Eagle here to Montgomery County. It is one of several raptors at the park used to educate visitors about the birds.
