MONTGOMERY COUNTY CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH
The public is invited to join Montgomery County in a celebration of the achievements and contributions of African Americans at a Black History Month event on Wednesday, February 21, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm at the Montgomery County Human Services Center, 1430 DeKalb Street, Norristown.
“In addition to celebrating our beautiful culture and rich heritage, the event will focus on education, both formal and informal learning,” said Marlene Harris-Peter, Chairperson of the Black History Celebration Planning Committee, noting, “This year’s theme is ‘Lifelong Learning’. It is so important that both young and old know the importance of acquiring information…..knowledge...marketable skills….wisdom “.
“To that end, the event will feature panelists who all have something to offer, consistent with the theme of lifelong learning’” Harris-Peter added. Among them will be CEO and founder of The Amoore Group, Renee Amoore, the first female and African American to chair a Pennsylvania delegation to the Republican National Convention. Other noted speakers will include Eric Almonte, JD, Director of Equity & Diversity Initiatives, Montgomery County Community College, Elizabeth Yetunde Adeyi, Deputy Director, Child Care Information Services of Montgomery County, Dr. Darlene Davis, Director of Student Services, Norristown Area School District, Minnie E. Grayson, a member of the “E Generation” and Debra Henderson-Scott, entrepreneur.
The celebration will offer entertainment by members of the Eisenhower Middle School Choir, gospel selections by Herbert Weaver and storytelling by Momma Sandi. The Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library and the Upper Merion High School Library will provide displays of African heritage. Buffalo Soldiers, Ellis W. Dean and Henry Washington, and Tuskegee Airmen Dr. Robert Williams and Charles “Roscoe” Draper are scheduled to attend.
Abington School District Volunteer Coordinator/Guidance Counselor, Mary Rodgers, and Cabrini College Coordinator of The Cabrini Partnership Project at Norristown, Jeannie E. Gustafson, have both offered to provide student volunteer support for the event.
