BERKS COUNTY CONNECTOR TRAIL TO OPEN NEAR POTTSTOWN

The Montgomery County Commissioners are pleased to announce the openings of a new section of recreational trail, the Berks Connector section of the Schuylkill River Trail on Wednesday, May 10th.

The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony for the 1.5-mile segment at 1:30 p.m. just off Keystone Boulevard at College Drive in Pottstown. Parking is available in nearby Riverfront Park.

This new trail is a continuation of the trail that was built in 2004 as part of the Keystone Boulevard access roadway. There is an ongoing project to link Pottstown to Oaks via recreational trail. Montgomery County and Chester County are cooperating on this project under a federal aid program.

This segment extends that project to the Berks County line and there are plans to extend it from there to Reading and beyond to the upper reaches of the Schuylkill River.   The National and State Heritage Area is working with various agencies to complete the Trail into the headwaters of the Schuylkill.  When all is finished, the residents of Montgomery County will be the beneficiaries of a nationally significant trail system along the river.

This trail is a part of the Commissioner’s Four Year Trail Development initiative, which will see a total of 29 completed miles of trail by the end of year 2007.
