West Norriton Township was established on March 13, 1909, when the Township of Norriton was divided into two separate municipalities. West Norriton was primarily undeveloped with the exception of a strip of commercial and residential development along Ridge Pike. With the completion of the Schuylkill Expressway and the general development of Norristown, the township became increasingly residential. In addition, in the late 1960s, some industrial development became noticeable. Today, West Norriton has a nice balance between residential, commercial, industrial, and recreational areas. It should be noted that while West Norriton has its own identity, it is considered by many to be an important part of the Greater Norristown community. Identifiable portions of the township include Jeffersonville, Trooper, and Port Indian.
PUBLIC SERVICES: The township is serviced by public water and sewer facilities. A full-time police force serves the township. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies. Residential trash disposal is arranged by private contractors.
RECREATION: A full-time recreation director oversees various programs. Facilities include two small playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts, athletic fields and fitness trail. Some of these are located on Norristown School District property. Little League programs are run by the township. For more information on what is available, please call 610-631-0450.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: SEPTA bus lines provide easy access to the Norristown Transportation Center, as well as Collegeville, Pottstown and other communities.
SHOPPING: Neighborhood shopping centers and assorted small businesses are located in the township. For the most part they are centered along Ridge Pike or Main Street. The nearest major shopping mall is the Court and Plaza at King of Prussia. |
