Whitemarsh Township was established in 1704 and is one of the oldest townships in the county. The area was settled primarily by English and Welsh immigrants. By the end of the nineteenth century, many wealthy Philadelphia families established beautiful summer homes in Whitemarsh. The decades following the Second World War saw a large number of people move out of Philadelphia and settle in the township. Many old historic structures, such as churches and farm houses, are still standing today as reminders of the township’s long, rich history. The township can be described as an area of well-kept neighborhoods, tree-lined streets, open spaces, parks, and scenic lanes. Communities within the township include Broad Axe, Lafayette Hill, Spring Mill, Miquon and Barren Hill. In addition, some residents and businesses may have a Conshohocken mailing address, but are still located in the township.
PUBLIC SERVICES:
The central and southern portions of the township are serviced by public water and sewer facilities. A full-time police force serves the township. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies. Residential trash disposal is provided by private haulers who are contracted by the township.
RECREATION:
A recreation director oversees various activities. Facilities include four parks, bike paths, and assorted athletic fields. Little League programs are run by the Whitemarsh Youth Baseball Association. For more information on what is available, please call 610-825-3535.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:
SEPTA bus routes provide access to portions of Central and Eastern Montgomery County, as well as Philadelphia.
SHOPPING:
Community and specialty shopping centers are located in the lower end of the township. The nearest major shopping mall is the Plymouth Meeting Mall.
