West Conshohocken Borough was incorporated on October 6, 1874, and its territory was taken almost equally from the Townships of Lower and Upper Merion. Being a river borough, it contained a large number of mills and other industries. The Dougherty Quarry was once a prosperous business many years ago. Stone of superior quality known as “Conshohocken or Merion Blue,” much sought after for public buildings, was shipped by rail throughout the East. Today, with its proximity to PA 76 and I-476 (Blue Route), this small borough and its neighbor Conshohocken Borough have experienced office and some retail development that has provided thousands of jobs over the past several years. It should be noted that some residents and businesses in the surrounding Townships of Upper and Lower Merion may have a West Conshohocken mailing address. PUBLIC SERVICES: Public water and public sewer facilities service the borough. A full-time police force serves the community. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies. Residential trash disposal is provided by the borough. RECREATION: Facilities include a park with playground equipment. Some basketball courts and athletic fields are available to borough residents. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: SEPTA bus lines make access to the Norristown Transportation Center convenient. Also, bus and rail lines connect the borough to other portions of Montgomery County and Philadelphia. SHOPPING: Future redevelopment will mean an increase in the borough’s retail facilities over the next several years. The nearest major shopping mall is the Plymouth Meeting Mall.
