Upper Moreland Township was established in 1917, when the Township of Moreland was divided into two municipalities. Overall, development occurred faster in Upper Moreland as opposed to Lower Moreland. Small business development was apparent during the 1920s. Many of the establishments were dependent on the railroads for their economic life. However, like most of the county’s larger municipalities, substantial development occurred after World War II. The completion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike helped attract some businesses and residential growth. The township has very little if any open space left for development. However, the township is a highly recognized residential community. It should be noted that many residents and businesses in the township will have a Willow Grove, Hatboro or Bryn Athyn mailing address.
PUBLIC SERVICES:
The entire township is serviced by public water and sewer facilities. A full-time police force serves the township. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies. Residential trash disposal is provided by the township.
RECREATION:
A full-time recreation director is employed by the township. Facilities include many parks and playgrounds, tennis courts, athletic fields and a fitness trail. Little League programs are run by private organizations. For more information on what is available, please call 215-659-3100.
