Originally a part of Hanover Township, Upper Hanover became a separate township along with Douglass, New Hanover, and Pottsgrove in 1741. It is the fourth largest municipality in the county. The township was settled almost entirely by German immigrants, part of the large wave arriving from Philadelphia in the mid-eighteenth century. A major attraction is the Green Lane Reservoir and the surrounding county park land. Upper Hanover is still a highly rural and agricultural area. However, some residential developments have and will continue to slowly add to the local population. Recognized areas in the township include Palm and Perkiomen Heights. It should be noted that some residents may actually live in the township, but have a East Greenville, Pennsburg or Red Hill mailing address.
PUBLIC SERVICES:
Portions of the township surrounding the three boroughs mentioned above are serviced by public water and sewer facilities. Police protection is provided by the Pennsylvania State Police. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies. Residential trash disposal is arranged by private contractors.
RECREATION:
Facilities include a small area for basketball and other sports. A private swimming pool is located in the township. In addition, a large portion of the Montgomery County Upper Perkiomen Valley Park is located in the township. For more information on what is available, please call 215-679-4401.
