Upper Frederick Township was established on November 20, 1919, when the Township of Frederick was divided into two separate municipalities. The area was settled principally by German immigrants in the early eighteenth century and remains, to a large extent, rural and agricultural. Even today, the unique style of Pennsylvania German barns and farmhouses can be seen throughout the township. Montgomery County has preserved 536 acres in the northern portion of the township as the Upper Perkiomen Valley Park. Many viable farms still operate in the township despite some very modest residential development over the past few years. The township, while still being rural in nature, has a few recognizable small villages such as Frederick, Obelisk, and Perkiomenville. In addition, some residents of the township may have a Green Lane mailing address. PUBLIC SERVICES: No public water or sewer facilities serve the township. Police protection is provided by the Pennsylvania State Police. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies. Residential trash disposal is arranged by private contractors. RECREATION: The park areas are the Montgomery County Upper Perkiomen Valley Park near Green Lane Reservoir, the Bob Wayland Memorial Park, and the Constable Charles Speelhoffer Memorial Park. These areas are probably the most beautiful areas of the county. Little League programs are run by private organizations in surrounding communities. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: No SEPTA bus or rail lines serve the township. SHOPPING: No major community or neighborhood shopping facilities are located in the township. The nearest major shopping mall is the Coventry Mall outside of Pottstown, in Chester County.
