This small borough was incorporated on January 9, 1893. Rockledge was formed due to an overflow of Philadelphians from Fox Chase, an old community just across the county line in Philadelphia. Its approximately four-tenths of a square mile were taken from Abington Township. Primarily residential in its land use, most of its residents work in Philadelphia or other portions of Montgomery County. It should be noted that some homes and businesses, while having a Rockledge mailing address, will actually be located in surrounding Abington Township. PUBLIC SERVICES: The entire borough is serviced by public water and sewer facilities. A full-time police force serves the community. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies. Residential trash disposal is provided by the borough. RECREATION: An elected Councilman acts as Chairman of the Recreation Committee. Facilities include two playgrounds and some summer programs. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: SEPTA bus lines can be used to connect to rail service and points in Eastern Montgomery County and Philadelphia. SHOPPING: Main street shopping and a small community shopping center can be found along Huntingdon Pike. The nearest major shopping mall is the Willow Grove Park Mall.
