Pottstown Borough was incorporated on February 6, 1815. However, the area that is now Pottstown was settled well before that date. The coming of the railroads meant Pottstown’s large iron and steel industry could reach new markets. The borough has historically had large industrial and manufacturing employers such as Firestone and Bethlehem Steel. By 1980, Pottstown lost these two large employers. However, the borough has rebounded from the loss of these two giants and has, since that period, seen the development of two major industrial parks. Today, Pottstown’s historic district is considered by many as first rate. In addition, a satellite campus of the Montgomery County Community College has been built within the borough. The Pottstown mailing address extends well into surrounding municipalities.
PUBLIC SERVICES: The entire borough is serviced by a recently upgraded sewer facility. Public water is available to the entire borough. A full-time police force serves the community. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies and some professionally trained borough employees. Residential trash disposal is provided by a private hauler.
RECREATION: A full-time director oversees various programs. The major attraction is Memorial Park which encompasses 120 acres. Other facilities include a public pool, playgrounds, and ball fields. For more information on what is available, please call 610-970-6510.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Pottstown Urban Transit provides access to points in the Greater Pottstown area including the Coventry Mall. A SEPTA bus route runs along the borough’s main street offering service to Norristown and points in between.
SHOPPING: A shopping center along with many small businesses and shops, including a main street shopping district offer plenty for area residents. The nearest major shopping mall is the Coventry Mall in Chester County.
