While it was officially incorporated as a borough in 1812, this small town once known as Norris, was a center for commerce and industry before the incorporation of Montgomery County in 1784. By 1900, Norristown had grown to be the banking center for the area, as well as home to a large manufacturing base and a growing county workforce. Norristown contains a large number of historic buildings that stand to remind residents of its long history. Today, Norristown is hoping to continue an economic comeback that started many years ago with such large projects as the Norristown Transportation Center, the Stony Creek Office Center and Lafayette Place. It should be noted that when local people refer to the Greater Norristown Area, this will include East & West Norriton Townships, as well as portions of Plymouth Township. In addition, many residents and businesses in the previously mentioned municipalities will have a Norristown mailing address.
