What is now Lower Pottsgrove was once a part of Pottsgrove Township. On December 2, 1889, Lower Pottsgrove was incorporated and its 7.45 square miles were taken solely from what was Pottsgrove Township. The population grew slowly in the early 1900s. However, with increased industrial development nearby, the township saw an increase in its residential base. More and more land was slowly being sold to developers, and new homes were built in several areas of Lower Pottsgrove. Today, the township is working to keep a balance residential development and open space. It should be noted that most residents and businesses will have a Pottstown mailing address but are located in the township. The Sanatoga section of the township is commonly recognized for the businesses that are there.
PUBLIC SERVICES: All except the northern third of the township is serviced by public water and sewer facilities. A full-time police force serves the township. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies. Residential trash disposal is arranged by private contractors who are contracted by the township.
RECREATION: The township works in conjunction with the Pottsgrove Recreation Board and the Pottsgrove School District. Little League programs are run by private organizations. For more information on what is available, please call 610-323-0436.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Pottstown Urban Transit allows access to the Gilbertsville/Boyertown area and other points in Greater Pottstown. Also, a SEPTA bus route travels through the township.
SHOPPING: Many small businesses and specialty shops are located in the township. In recent years, some new shopping facilities have opened with a few additional ones in the planning stages. In addition, the shopping areas in neighboring Pottstown Borough are easily accessible. The nearest major shopping mall is the Coventry Mall in Chester County. |
