William Penn named Moreland Township after Nicolas More, a physician from London, England. Moreland Township was established in 1682, and was divided in two in 1917. At the time, Lower Moreland was primarily a small rural community. Like many Montgomery County communities, the post-World War II era saw the creation of large residential developments. Today, while little land is available for development, the township contains quality housing and shopping opportunities for area residents. It should be noted that the township contains communities such as Bethayres, Huntingdon Valley, and Philmont. In this northeastern section of Montgomery County, Lower Moreland shares a boundary with both Bucks and Philadelphia County.
PUBLIC SERVICES:
The entire township is serviced by public water and sewer facilities. A full-time police force serves the township. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies. The township contracts with private haulers to dispose of residential trash.
RECREATION:
Facilities include three public playgrounds, athletic fields, and tennis courts. Little League programs are run by the Huntingdon Valley Athletic Association. For more information on what is available, please call 215-947-3100.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:
SEPTA bus and rail lines connect the township with all major points in Eastern Montgomery County, portions of Bucks County, and Philadelphia.
SHOPPING:
Neighborhood and specialty shopping facilities are located within the township. The nearest major shopping mall is the Willow Grove Park Mall.
