Hatboro was incorporated on August 26, 1871, taking its six-hundred acres from what was then Moreland Township. Original documents, however, indicate that 1715 was the earliest date of settlement. Trains that took residents back and forth from Philadelphia helped settle the area. This small, quaint community has many old and historically significant buildings and was the fifteenth municipality in the state to have established a historic commission to preserve its history and architecture. Today, the borough has a nice main street business district, as well as well-maintained residential areas. County folklore suggests that the borough was named after an eighteenth-century hat maker who supplied Washington’s Army with hats. It should be noted that businesses or residents may have a Hatboro mailing address, but are actually located in Horsham or Lower Moreland Townships. PUBLIC SERVICES: The entire borough is serviced by public water and sewer facilities. A full-time police force serves the community. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies. Residential trash disposal is arranged by private contractors and billed to the homeowner by the borough. RECREATION: A full-time recreation director is employed by the borough. Facilities include three parks with playgrounds, one lighted tennis court, a basketball court, a softball field, and a public swimming pool. Little League programs are run by private organizations. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Both SEPTA bus and rail lines connect the borough with Philadelphia, Southern Bucks County, and a large portion of Montgomery County. SHOPPING: A main street shopping district serves the community. The nearest major shopping mall is the Willow Grove Park Mall.
