CHAMBER OF COMMERCE:
Tri-County Area

Douglass Township was established in 1741 and was settled primarily by German or Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants. The size of Douglass Township was reduced in 1807 as a result of the incorporation of Pottsgrove Township. Whereas the township had originally extended to the Schuylkill River, its southern boundary was then set at its present location. With the availability of prime farmland for development, the construction of single family homes has added to the township’s population. The Gilbertsville portion of the township has a small town feel with a nice mix of older and new retail and service businesses. However, the township is still somewhat rural and is one of the most beautiful areas of Montgomery County. The village of Gilbertsville is considered the center of activities for the township.
PUBLIC SERVICES:
Two authorities provide public sewer lines to the southern one-third of the township. The Gilbertsville portion of the township is serviced by public water. A full-time police force serves the community. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies. Residential trash disposal is provided by private haulers who are contracted by the township. Residents must purchase the trash bags for a set fee per bag.
RECREATION:
Township facilities include a local park, a public playground, an athletic field, a public tennis court, and several basketball courts. Little League programs are run by Boyertown Borough in Berks County. For more information on what is actually available, please call 610-367-6062.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:
Pottstown Urban Transit provides bus service from the community of Gilbertsville to the Greater Pottstown area including Coventry Mall in Chester County. SEPTA bus service is available in Pottstown Borough.
SHOPPING:
Community and specialty shopping facilities are located for the most part in the Gilbertsville portion of the township. Neighboring Boyertown Borough has many specialty shops and small businesses. The nearest major shopping mall is the Coventry Mall in Chester County.
